West Maui Loop

The West Maui Loop, a road bike ride suggested by Jeff Oatley and Heather Best. About 80 sun-drenched, whale-splashed miles. Loop performed clockwise.

With rented bike, rich in carbon and light on spokes. Sandals, no padded shorts, some other bad ideas.

Humpback whales off the left shoulder all day. See you in AK!

Reading room, north end of Maui.

Honolua Bay.

Dude in frozen smoothie bus.

Guava smoothie headache at 83 degrees F. Drank 200 oz. of fluids on the ride, sweating like Meat Loaf during reunion tour. Tropical breezes cooled the engine, preventing vapor lock.

Tim, from Seattle, and Mick, from L.A., freezing brains.

Tim and Mick crush the hill.

Kahakuloa. No hotels, no stores. Like an Alaska village, only air doesn't hurt.

Homestretch. Back to Kihei with a tailwind for the last 20 miles. Good thing, yes. Stopped at the fruit stand and then rode the bike back into the shop before walking home bowlegged with goofy smile.
